Flutes are arches of containerboard that, when affixed to the linerboard, resist bending and pressure from all directions. The flutes form rigid columns capable of supporting great weight and act as cushions that protect the container contents. Flutes come in several standard shapes, A, B, C, E & F.

    Image: Flutes
    • A- largest, oldest and most commonly used flute
    • B- smaller than A
    • C- larger than B, but smaller than A
    • E- smaller than B
    • F- smaller than E
    • (be sure to notice that the sizes go down from A, C, B, E, F and not alphabetically)

Different sizes of flutes can be used within the same project. This technique is used to manipulate the strength, cushioning and thickness of a package according to a specific product.
